Colorado’s oil and natural gas industry is committed to reducing emissions, protecting our environment, and improving air quality
Colorado’s air quality regulations are among the strongest in the nation.
When it comes to responsible oil and natural gas development in Colorado, everything is carefully planned and monitored, and done according to state and local laws. In fact, Colorado’s oil and natural gas industry has undergone 15 rulemakings in the last decade to ensure our regulations are up-to-date with the latest technological innovations.
Today, Colorado companies are working to curb methane and other emissions, reduce gas flaring, advance new carbon capture technology, and implement new greenhouse gas monitoring tools.
- In 2013, Colorado became the first state in the nation to require water sampling before and after oil and natural gas drilling to ensure water remains safe.
- In 2014, Colorado became the first state in the nation to regulate methane from oil and gas operations. Colorado’s oil and natural gas industry worked with regulators, the Department of Public Health and Environment, and environmental groups to craft these groundbreaking rules.
- In 2019, researchers with Yale University showed how new technology, including lasers and drones, is helping curb methane emissions in the field. Today, Colorado is using state of the art technology and state-of-the-art cameras to continue to reduce emissions across the board, from production to trucks and transportation.
- In 2022, Colorado’s energy industry worked hand-in-hand with regulators to implement a new “first-in-the-nation” rule slashing methane emissions. According to the Colorado Sun, “Industry and environmental groups worked out a way to reduce emissions from new wells and old ones.”
